Some dogs live for the splash of a good fetch session, and the Ruffwear Hydro Plane is built to keep that game going all year. This soft foam flying disc uses a lightweight, pontoon-like construction that floats high on both water and snow, so it’s easy for you and your dog to spot no matter the season or the terrain.

The oversized ring shape is easy for dogs to grab, which makes it a confidence-builder for dogs still learning to fetch, and its soft build is gentle on teeth and gums. Beyond the throw, the same oversized design invites a game of tug-of-war, so the Hydro Plane earns its keep as both a fetch disc and an interactive tug toy. Abrasion-resistant denier nylon and a tough PE foam rim mean it holds its shape and keeps flying true, even after repeated water landings — a real advantage over toys like tennis balls that get heavy and waterlogged.

The Hydro Plane comes in two sizes, so you can match it to your dog’s size and play style, and it dries quickly and packs light for trips to the lake, river, or snowy trail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Hydro Plane float? Yes. Its lightweight, pontoon-like foam construction lets it float high on both water and snow, making it easy to spot and retrieve after a throw.

What sizes does the Hydro Plane come in? It’s available in two sizes: Medium (9 in / 23 cm) and Large (12 in / 30.5 cm), so you can choose the right fit for your dog.

Is the Hydro Plane safe for dogs still learning to fetch? Yes. Its soft, gentle-on-the-mouth construction and oversized, easy-to-grab shape make it a good option for building a dog’s confidence with catching.

Can it be used for tug-of-war, not just fetch? Yes. The oversized ring design is easy to grab from multiple angles, which makes it well suited to interactive tug play in addition to throwing.

Is the Hydro Plane a chew toy? No. Like other Ruffwear toys, it’s designed for interactive, supervised play rather than solo chewing. Remove it from your dog’s reach once play is finished.

Does it work in snow as well as water? Yes. The same buoyant construction that lets it float on water also keeps it visible and easy to retrieve on snow, making it a year-round toy.
